John McKenzie, Child Pornography Distribution, South Dakota 2018

John McKenzie, a 24-year-old man from Brandon, South Dakota, is going to federal prison for nearly eight years after being convicted of receiving and distributing child pornography across digital platforms. On February 5, 2018, U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier handed down a 97-month sentence, marking the end of a federal investigation that exposed McKenzie’s disturbing online activity.

Between July 19, 2015, and May 10, 2016, McKenzie used his internet-connected computer to access chat-based services Omegle and Kik Messenger, where he exchanged graphic digital files containing child pornography. Many of the images involved prepubescent minors, law enforcement confirmed, underscoring the severity and predatory nature of the crimes.

McKenzie was indicted by a federal grand jury on December 6, 2016, on charges of distribution and receipt of child pornography. After more than a year of legal proceedings, he pleaded guilty on November 2, 2017, admitting his role in the transfer and possession of illegal material depicting children in sexually explicit acts.

In addition to his 97-month prison term, McKenzie will serve five years of supervised release upon completion of his sentence. He was also ordered to pay $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund—a small but symbolic restitution in a case defined by profound harm to the most vulnerable victims.

The investigation was carried out by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement under the Department of Homeland Security, with digital footprints leading agents directly to McKenzie’s residence in Brandon. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeff Clapper led the prosecution, ensuring federal charges stuck in a case that relied heavily on electronic evidence and online behavior patterns.

Following sentencing, McKenzie was immediately taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service. His name is now entered into the federal sex offender registry, a lifetime consequence that follows the prison term. The case serves as a grim reminder that digital anonymity offers no shield from federal justice when children are exploited.
