John Moore, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, New York 2020

Rochester Felon Sentenced to 51 Months for Firearm Charge

A Rochester felon has been sentenced to 51 months in prison for being in possession of a firearm and possessing a firearm with an obliterated serial number.

John Moore, 37, of Rochester, NY, was convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number, according to U.S. Attorney Trini E. Ross.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Cassie Kocher stated that Moore has four prior felony drug convictions in Monroe, Schuyler, and Steuben Counties and is legally prohibited from possessing a firearm.

On April 2020, Rochester Police officers were called to Tremont Street for a report of a man named John in a blue minivan with a gun. Upon arrival, officers saw Moore near the driver door of the blue minivan before he quickly entered a nearby house through the front door. Officers subsequently recovered a silver revolver with an obliterated serial number under the driver seat of the blue minivan.

The case was brought by the U.S. Attorney’s Office as part of its Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) initiative, which focuses on reducing violent crime by targeting the most violent offenders and partnering with locally based prevention and reentry programs.

The sentencing is the result of an investigation by the Rochester Police Department, under the direction of Interim Chief David M. Smith, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, under the direction of Special Agent-in-Charge John B. DeVito, New York Field Division.
