TAMPA, FL – Jojuan Lindsey, 27, of St. Petersburg, is facing serious federal charges after being indicted on one count of possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon. Federal prosecutors are seeking up to 15 years behind bars if Lindsey is found guilty.
According to court documents, Lindsey was found to be in possession of a Glock model 42 semiautomatic pistol and six rounds of Hornady 38 Auto ammunition on December 27, 2022. But this wasn’t a simple weapons violation. Lindsey’s rap sheet is already overflowing with felony convictions, making any possession of a firearm illegal under federal law.
The indictment details a disturbing pattern of criminal behavior. Lindsey has previously been convicted of six felonies, including battery of a law enforcement officer – a direct attack on those sworn to protect the public. He’s also been convicted of burglary, fleeing or eluding a law enforcement officer, and, alarmingly, three separate counts of sale or delivery of heroin. This individual has repeatedly demonstrated a disregard for the law and a willingness to endanger the community.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), alongside the St. Petersburg Police Department, spearheaded the investigation that led to Lindsey’s indictment. Assistant United States Attorney Samantha Newman will be prosecuting the case, with forfeiture proceedings handled by Assistant United States Attorney Suzanne Nebesky. The feds are signaling they intend to pursue the maximum penalty.
Prosecutors are quick to point out that an indictment is not a conviction. Lindsey is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. However, given his extensive criminal history, the evidence against him appears substantial. This case is being touted as part of the Department of Justice’s “Project Safe Neighborhoods” (PSN) initiative, a nationwide program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence.
PSN focuses on fostering trust with communities, supporting local anti-violence organizations, prioritizing strategic enforcement, and measuring results. Whether this program will truly make a difference in curbing the tide of gun violence remains to be seen, but for now, it means another alleged criminal is facing the consequences of their actions. The Tampa Field Division of the ATF is handling the investigation and prosecution.
