Jonathan Anthony Jones, Assaulting a Federal Officer, South Dakota 2018

A 29-year-old man from Rosebud, South Dakota, has been charged with Assaulting a Federal Officer. Jonathan Anthony Jones, also known as D.J. Jones, was indicted by a federal grand jury on January 22, 2019.

The indictment alleges that on November 16, 2018, Jones forcibly assaulted, opposed, impeded, intimidated, and interfered with a Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services officer, using a dangerous weapon in the process.

The charge carries a maximum penalty of up to 20 years in federal prison and/or a $250,000 fine, 3 years of supervised release, and $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be ordered.

Jones appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on January 31, 2019, and pled not guilty to the indictment.

The investigation is being conducted by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Kirk Albertson handling the prosecution.

Jones was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending trial. A trial date has not been set.

The charge is merely an accusation, and Jones is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
