Jonathan Bufford, Methamphetamine Trafficking, TN 2016

A 43-year-old Somerville man is headed to federal prison for over 12 years after being convicted of funneling large quantities of methamphetamine through rural West Tennessee. Jonathan Bufford was sentenced to 151 months in federal prison on Thursday, December 15, 2016, following a years-long investigation into his role in a regional drug trafficking ring.

According to court records, Bufford operated as a key middleman between a Memphis-based supplier and a network of distributors across West Tennessee between 2014 and 2015. He routinely purchased distribution-level amounts of meth, hauled them back to his home in Fayette County, and then paid couriers to spread the drugs into surrounding rural areas.

The operation unraveled in April 2015, when the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office received an anonymous tip that Bufford was running a drug operation out of his residence in Somerville. Investigators executed a search warrant and seized 108 grams of meth, three digital scales, and three cell phones—evidence that painted a clear picture of ongoing trafficking.

Bufford pleaded guilty in September 2016 before U.S. District Court Judge Samuel H. Mays Jr. to one count of unlawfully possessing with intent to distribute multiple grams of methamphetamine. The charge carried substantial weight under federal sentencing guidelines, especially given the quantity and organized nature of the operation.

Edward L. Stanton III, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Tennessee, confirmed the sentence, emphasizing federal and local cooperation in dismantling the trafficking network. “This prosecution sends a message that large-scale drug distribution will be met with serious federal consequences,” Stanton said.

The case was jointly investigated by the 25th District Attorney General’s Office and the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office. Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Sam Stringfellow handled the prosecution. Bufford will serve his 151-month sentence in federal custody, followed by supervised release.
