A gruesome crime has shaken the Winnebago Indian Reservation in Nebraska. Jonathan D. Rooney, 27, has been found guilty of manslaughter and destruction of evidence by a federal jury in the District of Nebraska.
According to the evidence presented in court, Rooney killed Kozee Decorah, 22, and then burned her body and other evidence at an abandoned cabin on the reservation.
The tragic events unfolded on May 16, 2020, when Decorah called the Winnebago Police to report that the vehicle the trio was using was stuck in the mud. When Conservation Officers located the vehicle, they were unable to find Decorah, Rooney, or their infant son.
The officers discovered a fire near midnight in the outhouse of a remote cabin. Rooney was found in the cabin, naked in a bed with his clothes missing, along with their baby. Blood droplets were observed in the cabin, and human remains in the form of a skull were found in the fire. Decorah was identified through dental records.
The case was thoroughly investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Winnebago Police, the Winnebago Conservation Office, Winnebago Volunteer Firefighters, and the Nebraska State Fire Marshal.
Chief United States District Judge Robert F. Rossiter, Jr. has ordered a presentence investigation report. Rooney will be sentenced on March 11, 2022, at 11:00 a.m.
The guilty verdict marks a significant step in the justice process for Kozee Decorah’s family and the community. Rooney’s crimes have left a lasting impact, and his sentencing will provide closure for those affected.
