James Loyd Wainright, 36, of Joplin, Mo., is facing federal charges after a grand jury returned a three-count indictment accusing him of attempting to produce child pornography using two minors in 2017. The indictment, handed down Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2018, in Springfield, Mo., lays bare a calculated effort to exploit children for sexually explicit material.
According to the indictment, Wainright attempted to use a minor born in 2002 between June 25 and August 6, 2017, to produce child pornography. On a separate occasion during the same time frame, he allegedly targeted a second minor, born in 2003, in another attempt to create illicit images. Both counts charge him with attempted production of child pornography, a crime carrying severe penalties under federal law.
In addition to the production charges, Wainright is accused of receiving and distributing child pornography. The nature of the charges suggests not only active participation in the creation of exploitative content but also its circulation within criminal networks, amplifying the harm to victims.
Timothy A. Garrison, United States Attorney for the Western District of Missouri, confirmed the indictment but reminded the public that charges are allegations, not proof of guilt. “Evidence must be presented to a federal jury,” Garrison stated, “whose sole duty is to determine innocence or guilt based on facts presented in court.”
The investigation was conducted by the Southwest Missouri Cyber Crimes Task Force and the Webb City, Mo., Police Department, highlighting the collaborative effort required to dismantle digital predator networks. Assistant U.S. Attorney Ami Harshad Miller is prosecuting the case, which falls under the broader federal crackdown on child sexual exploitation.
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a Department of Justice initiative launched in May 2006 to combat child sexual abuse and exploitation. Through coordinated federal, state, and local action, the program aims to identify, rescue, and protect child victims while aggressively pursuing those who exploit them online and in person.
