Clay Austin Parker, Post Office Burglary, Alabama 2023

BIRMINGHAM – A brazen burglary at the Joppa Post Office has landed two northeast Alabama men in hot water. On December 28, Clay Austin Parker, 34, of Arab, and Brett Michael Baker, 30, of Albertville, allegedly broke into the post office and made off with a haul of stolen goods.

The men join two others, Andrew Clayton Rogers and Tessa Jean McCay, who were indicted in March for the 2015 burglary. The latest indictment, filed in U.S. District Court, charges Parker and Baker with four counts of theft and burglary.

The charges include post office burglary, theft of a post office key, theft of postal property, and theft of postal money orders. If convicted, Parker and Baker face serious consequences, including up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for theft of a post office key.

The maximum penalty for post office burglary and theft of postal money orders is five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Theft of postal property carries a maximum sentence of three years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service investigated the case, which Assistant U.S. Attorney Davis Barlow is prosecuting. An indictment contains only charges, and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

The Joppa Post Office burglary is just the latest in a string of high-profile crimes in the area. Residents are on high alert, and authorities are working to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The case is a reminder of the importance of community vigilance and cooperation with law enforcement. As the investigation continues, residents are encouraged to come forward with any information that may aid in the prosecution of Parker and Baker.
