Jordan Dale Burgess, 33, of Southaven, Mississippi, has been sentenced to one year and one day in prison for possession of a stolen firearm. The sentencing comes after Burgess was caught on surveillance video stealing a firearm from a Federal Firearms Licensed dealer in Yazoo City, Mississippi, in March of 2023.
According to court documents, Burgess was indicted by a federal grand jury on June 6, 2023, and later pled guilty on December 12, 2023, to possession of a stolen firearm. The guilty plea was a result of a thorough investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
The case against Burgess was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Matt Allen, with U.S. Attorney Todd W. Gee of the Southern District of Mississippi and Special Agent in Charge Joshua Jackson of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives making the announcement. The sentencing of Burgess is a significant step forward in the efforts to reduce violent crime and gun violence in the community.
The investigation into Burgess’s activities was part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program that brings together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime and gun violence, and to make our neighborhoods safer for everyone. The program, which was launched on May 26, 2021, is based on core principles that include fostering trust and legitimacy in our communities, supporting community-based organizations that help prevent violence from occurring in the first place, setting focused and strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring the results.
The sentencing of Jordan Dale Burgess serves as a reminder that the possession of stolen firearms will not be tolerated in the community. The collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies and the community have led to the successful prosecution of Burgess, and it is hoped that this will serve as a deterrent to others who may be involved in similar activities.
In a statement, U.S. Attorney Todd W. Gee praised the work of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and the Assistant U.S. Attorney Matt Allen for their roles in the investigation and prosecution of Burgess. The successful outcome of the case is a testament to the commitment of law enforcement agencies to reducing violent crime and gun violence in the community.
The case of Jordan Dale Burgess is a prime example of the importance of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) and the impact it can have on reducing violent crime and gun violence in the community. The program has been successful in bringing together law enforcement agencies and the community to address the root causes of violence and to develop strategies to prevent it from occurring in the first place. As the community continues to work together to reduce violent crime and gun violence, the sentencing of Burgess serves as a reminder that there will be consequences for those who engage in such activities.
