Jordan James Martinez, Firearms Fraud, Aurora CO, 2022

DENVER, CO – Jordan James Martinez, 24, of Aurora, is facing federal charges after being indicted by a grand jury for allegedly running a scheme to illegally obtain firearms for others. The indictment alleges Martinez repeatedly lied to licensed gun dealers between June 2019 and April 2022, falsely claiming he was the true buyer when he was, in fact, purchasing the weapons on behalf of someone else.

The scheme, as outlined by federal prosecutors, involved Martinez making both oral and written misrepresentations to multiple firearms dealers. He allegedly presented himself as the end user of the guns, knowing full well he intended to transfer them to individuals prohibited from owning them, or who simply wished to avoid the legal purchase process. This practice, known as straw purchasing, is a common tactic used to arm criminals and fuel gun violence.

Martinez made his initial court appearance before Magistrate Judge S. Kato Crews on October 14, 2022. Details regarding bail and future court dates were not immediately released. The investigation was spearheaded by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), with crucial assistance from the Aurora Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Kelly Churnet is handling the prosecution.

Federal officials are quick to emphasize that the indictment only contains allegations. Martinez is presumed innocent until proven guilty at trial. The government bears the burden of proof, and he has the right to legal counsel and a vigorous defense. However, if convicted, Martinez could face significant prison time and hefty fines for his alleged actions.

This case falls under the umbrella of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a Department of Justice program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence through coordinated law enforcement efforts. The program emphasizes building trust with communities, supporting local violence prevention groups, and strategically targeting enforcement.

The Department of Justice launched a renewed focus on PSN in May 2021, outlining a strategy that prioritizes community engagement, focused enforcement, and measurable results. This case, investigators say, is a direct result of those efforts, intended to disrupt the flow of illegal firearms and make neighborhoods safer. Case Number: 22-cr-306.
