A 33-year-old Quemado man was sentenced to 235 months in federal prison for harboring and causing serious bodily injury to an illegal alien, according to a recent press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Texas.
Jorge Estrada-Torres, 33, was sentenced for harboring an illegal alien who he later shot in the abdomen on June 1, 2020. Estrada-Torres pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to harbor illegal aliens resulting in serious bodily injury, one count of harboring illegal aliens resulting in serious bodily injury, and one count of felon in possession of a firearm.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office stated that ‘Human smuggling is a dangerous business focused on profits, not people.’ The office expressed its commitment to working with federal, state, and local law enforcement to end the practice of human smuggling and bring human smugglers to justice.
Homeland Security Investigations Special Agent in Charge Shane Folden, San Antonio, stated that ‘This case illustrates the dangerous actions human smugglers are willing to take to ensure personal profit.’ He emphasized the agency’s commitment to bringing to justice the criminal organizations that prey on vulnerable individuals with no regard for their well-being.
HSI investigated the case with assistance from the U.S. Border Patrol, Del Rio Sector, and the Maverick County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney James Ward prosecuted the case.
