FORT WORTH, Texas – In a shocking case of narcotics trafficking, Jose Milton Puentes, 34, has been sentenced to 360 months in federal prison for distributing methamphetamine in the Northern District of Texas.
Puentes, a resident of California, was arrested in May 2015 in the Los Angeles area for an indictment filed in the Northern District of Texas. He made his initial appearance in federal court in Los Angeles and was released on bond.
After entering his guilty plea in U.S. District Court in Fort Worth on July 17, 2015, Judge John McBryde remanded him into federal custody.
According to documents filed in the case, on April 4, 2013, Puentes shipped, or caused to be shipped, approximately one pound of methamphetamine from California to Fort Worth via UPS. The methamphetamine arrived the following day, and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) intercepted it.
The DEA investigated the case, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Shawn Smith prosecuted it.
Puentes’ lengthy prison sentence serves as a stern warning to those involved in narcotics trafficking in the Northern District of Texas. As the investigation revealed, Puentes’ actions had severe consequences for the community.
The case is a prime example of the DEA’s commitment to disrupting and dismantling narcotics trafficking organizations. Assistant U.S. Attorney Shawn Smith’s diligent work in prosecuting the case ensured that Puentes would face the consequences of his actions.
