SIOUX FALLS, SD – Jose Consequences come hard and fast for those who think they can terrorize the streets. Jose Uribe, 26, of Sioux Falls, is headed to federal prison for twelve years after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit carjacking and brandishing a firearm during the commission of a crime. U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier handed down the sentence on November 30th, along with three years of supervised release and a $200 assessment for the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
The case began unfolding on May 31, 2022, when Uribe and two accomplices strong-armed a driver, pointing a shotgun at them and demanding they exit the vehicle. The trio then peeled off in the stolen car, later leading police on a foot chase after ditching the vehicle. A federal grand jury indicted Uribe in August 2022 on charges of carjacking, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, and brandishing a firearm during a crime. He entered a guilty plea on September 11th.
Court documents paint a clear picture of a brazen and dangerous act. Uribe wasn’t just looking for a joyride; he used a weapon to instill fear and seize a vehicle. The fact that this culminated in a pursuit only heightened the risk to both the public and law enforcement. The evidence presented to the court clearly demonstrated the severity of Uribe’s actions.
U.S. Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell, speaking through a press release, framed the sentencing as part of the Department of Justice’s “Project Safe Neighborhoods” initiative. This program, she stated, aims to unite all levels of law enforcement and communities to drive down violent crime and gun violence. It’s a nice sentiment, but it’s the boots-on-the-ground work of the ATF and the Sioux Falls Police Department that brought Uribe to justice.
The investigation was a joint effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Sioux Falls Police Department, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Connie Larson handling the prosecution. Uribe is now in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, where he will begin serving his lengthy sentence. Twelve years won’t undo the trauma inflicted, but it removes a dangerous individual from the streets of Sioux Falls.
This case serves as a stark reminder that federal agencies are actively targeting violent offenders and holding them accountable. Anyone considering similar criminal activity should understand the steep price – and the long stretch of time – that awaits them. The Grimy Times will continue to track federal crime across the nation, bringing you the unvarnished truth about justice served.
