A federal jury in Concord has convicted a Poughkeepsie man of robbing a credit union in Hinsdale, New Hampshire.
Joseph M. Crocco, 42, of Poughkeepsie, New York, was found guilty of robbing the Service Credit Union branch located in the Walmart on Brattleboro Road in Hinsdale on December 21, 2017.
According to evidence presented at trial, Crocco entered the credit union and approached a teller, handing her two notes. He then claimed to have a bomb strapped to his body and threatened to detonate it unless the teller complied with his demands.
The teller handed over approximately $2,700 to Crocco, who then fled the scene. An investigation led by the New Hampshire State Police and the Hinsdale Police Department ultimately identified Crocco in images taken from the credit union’s security cameras.
Crocco will be sentenced on January 3, 2019. U.S. Attorney Scott W. Murray praised the law enforcement agencies involved in the investigation, saying that robberies of banks and credit unions are violent and dangerous crimes that jeopardize public safety.
“By threatening to blow himself up and instilling unnecessary fear in the tellers, Mr. Crocco jeopardized the safety of bank employees, customers, and other members of the community,” said Harold H. Shaw, Special Agent in Charge, FBI Boston Division.
The FBI worked closely with the New Hampshire State Police, the Hinsdale Police Department, the Brattleboro, Vermont Police Department, and the City of Poughkeepsie, New York Police Department to bring Crocco to justice. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Anna Dronzek and Charles Rombeau.
The guilty verdict is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the law enforcement agencies involved in the case. The community can rest a little easier knowing that a violent and dangerous individual is off the streets.
