Joseph Triplett, Felon in Possession of Firearm, New Jersey 2024

Newark, NJ – Joseph Triplett, a 32-year-old East Orange resident, has been sentenced to 32 months in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm, according to Acting U.S. Attorney Rachael A. Honig.

Triplett, a previously convicted felon, was arrested on September 6, 2019, after Newark Police officers observed him riding a bicycle on the sidewalk and refusing to stop when ordered to do so. During the pursuit, Triplett discarded a black fanny pack, which contained a .38 caliber Smith & Wesson revolver loaded with five rounds of ammunition.

As a convicted felon, Triplett is prohibited from possessing a firearm. The U.S. Attorney’s Office charged Triplett with one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm, to which he pleaded guilty.

U.S. District Judge John Michael Vazquez imposed the sentence in Newark federal court, in addition to three years of supervised release.

Acting U.S. Attorney Honig credited the FBI and Newark Police Department with the investigation leading to the sentencing.

Triplett’s case highlights the importance of enforcing gun laws and holding individuals accountable for their actions. The U.S. Attorney’s Office will continue to work to ensure public safety and prevent gun violence in our communities.
