Joshua Adam Schulte, Espionage & Child Pornography, New York 2023

Former CIA Officer Joshua Adam Schulte has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for espionage and child pornography crimes in a landmark case that has sent shockwaves through the intelligence community.

According to court documents, Schulte was accused of stealing sensitive information from the CIA and transmitting it to WikiLeaks, one of the largest unauthorized disclosures of classified information in U.S. history.

Schulte, who was employed as a software developer in the Center for Cyber Intelligence from 2012 to 2016, was also accused of possessing thousands of videos and images of children being subjected to sickening abuse for his personal gratification.

The FBI launched an investigation into Schulte’s activities in 2017, after he was moved out of the CIA’s Center for Cyber Intelligence due to personnel disputes.

Following his arrest, Schulte continued to cause harm to the nation by trying to publish top-secret information from behind bars, according to U.S. Attorney Damian Williams.

Schulte’s crimes caused ‘untold damage’ to U.S. national security, Williams said, adding that the former CIA officer doubled down on his harmful activities even after being caught.

The case against Schulte was one of the largest and most complex in U.S. history, involving multiple trials and investigations. It was finally concluded on September 13, 2023, with Schulte being sentenced to 40 years in prison.

The 40-year sentence reflects the severity of Schulte’s crimes, including espionage, computer hacking, contempt of Court, making false statements to the FBI, and child pornography.
