Joshua Brereton, Arson, Kalamazoo MI, 2022

GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN – Joshua Brereton, of Paw Paw, Michigan, has confessed to a calculated act of arson against the Kalamazoo Planned Parenthood clinic, federal authorities announced Wednesday. Brereton, admitting to deliberately igniting fires at the facility on July 31, 2022, now faces a significant prison sentence for what U.S. Attorney Mark Totten labeled a “senseless act of political violence.”

The feds say Brereton, meticulously prepared for the attack, purchased Citronella tiki torch fuel, a Duraflame fire starter log, a utility lighter, and a black baseball hat at a Paw Paw Walmart. Dressed in camouflage and concealing his identity, he breached the clinic’s security and methodically set three fires – one near the front entrance, another at the southwest corner, and a third on the building’s roof using the Duraflame log. He then fled the scene, leaving behind a trail of destruction and fear.

The motivation, according to the plea agreement, is steeped in extremist ideology. Brereton admitted to uploading a YouTube video titled “The Line Between Good and Evil,” in which he condemned abortion as “genocide.” He’d also populated his Facebook page with similar anti-abortion propaganda, revealing a clear pattern of radicalization. The investigation, a joint effort by the ATF, FBI, and Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety, quickly zeroed in on Brereton after the blaze.

“Arson is a heinous act of violence, and has a severe impact on the community,” stated ATF Assistant Special Agent in Charge Craig Kailimai. The collaborative work of multiple agencies was crucial in bringing Brereton to justice, officials say. But the damage is done, and the clinic, a vital resource for women’s healthcare, was forced to temporarily close its doors for repairs.

Brereton’s guilty plea carries a mandatory minimum of five years in federal prison, with a potential maximum sentence of up to 20 years. He also faces three years of supervised release, a fine of up to $250,000, and a hefty restitution order – estimated to exceed $20,000 – to cover the costs of repairing the damage he inflicted. Sentencing is scheduled for February 6, 2023, before United States District Judge Paul L. Maloney.

Assistant United States Attorney Stephanie Carowan is prosecuting the case. While a guilty plea is secured, the incident underscores the growing threat of violence fueled by extremist beliefs and the vulnerability of healthcare providers offering reproductive services. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the sentencing as it develops.
