ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Juan Aguirre, 30, was in federal court on Nov. 17 facing a string of charges including carjacking, attempted carjacking, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. Aguirre’s bond was denied by the judge, and he will remain in custody until a detention hearing on Nov. 19.

Aguirre, a resident of Albuquerque, has a history of felony convictions, including conspiracy to commit robbery, auto burglary, and conspiracy to commit auto burglary. As a felon, Aguirre is prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition.

On the morning of Oct. 12, detectives from the Albuquerque Police Department’s Gang Unit, along with Gang Suppression Officers, allegedly found Aguirre in a stolen pickup truck. At the time, Aguirre allegedly had a handgun in his possession.

Later that afternoon, while in police custody, Aguirre allegedly fell ill and requested to be taken to a hospital by ambulance. After arriving at the hospital, Aguirre allegedly walked out of the emergency entrance and through the parking lot. He then allegedly approached an occupied vehicle parked next to an elementary school, claiming to have a gun and demanding the driver to exit the vehicle and leave the keys inside.

The vehicle’s owner managed to drive away before Aguirre could gain entry. Aguirre then allegedly approached another vehicle at a nearby preschool. As the victim exited the vehicle, Aguirre allegedly demanded the keys, which the victim refused to hand over. In response, Aguirre allegedly ripped the keys from the victim’s hand and took the vehicle.

The FBI Violent Crimes and Gangs Task Force, along with the Albuquerque Police Department, investigated the case, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Timothy Trembley set to prosecute. If convicted, Aguirre faces up to 15 years in prison.
