A Providence man has been sentenced to six years in federal prison for his role in a cocaine conspiracy.
Juan Gonzalez, 46, pleaded guilty on January 25, 2024, to a charge of conspiracy to distribute and to possess with intent to distribute 500 grams or more of cocaine. He was sentenced on Tuesday by U.S. District Court Judge Mary S. McElroy to 72 months of incarceration to be followed by four years of federal supervised release.
According to charging documents and information presented to the court, Gonzalez made multiple purchases of cocaine that he later transformed into crack and then sold to others. The investigation, led by the FBI Safe Streets Task Force, revealed that Gonzalez purchased cocaine from William Mendez, 49, of Providence, between July 13, 2021, and August 12, 2021.
Gonzalez’s sentence is the result of a joint investigation by the FBI Safe Streets Task Force, consisting of agents and law enforcement officers from the FBI, Rhode Island State Police, the Cranston, Woonsocket, Pawtucket, West Warwick, and Central Falls Police Departments, and the U.S. Marshals Service.
William Mendez is currently detained in federal custody awaiting trial, charged by way of indictment with conspiracy to distribute and to possess with intent to distribute cocaine, and conspiracy to distribute and to possess with intent to distribute forty grams or more of fentanyl.
The cases are being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Stacey A. Erickson.
Gonzalez’s guilty plea and sentence serve as a reminder of the serious consequences of engaging in cocaine trafficking. The U.S. Attorney’s Office will continue to work closely with law enforcement agencies to disrupt and dismantle cocaine trafficking organizations.
