A brazen escape from federal custody has landed a 49-year-old Falfurrias man in hot water. Juan Luis Cruz pleaded guilty to knowingly leaving federal custody without permission, announced U.S. Attorney Jennifer B. Lowery.
Cruz’s troubles began after he previously pleaded guilty to conspiracy to transport undocumented aliens. On February 19, 2019, he was ordered to serve 40 months of imprisonment and three years of federal supervised release. He was transferred to a halfway house in Corpus Christi on September 1, 2021, to complete the sentence. However, Cruz had other plans.
Upon being transported to the halfway house in Corpus Christi, Cruz absconded by walking away from the facility without permission and did not return. Authorities located him on December 22, putting an end to his escape.
The U.S. Marshals Service conducted the investigation, and Assistant U.S. Attorney John Marck is prosecuting the case. U.S. District Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos will impose sentencing on June 8, at which time Cruz faces up to five more years in federal prison.
Cruz has been and will remain in custody pending that hearing. His guilty plea has sealed his fate, and only time will tell how long he will spend behind bars.
The case against Cruz serves as a reminder of the consequences of escaping from federal custody. Leaving prison or a halfway house without permission is a serious offense that can result in additional time in prison. Cruz’s story is a cautionary tale of the importance of following the rules and serving out one’s sentence.
As the investigation and prosecution of Cruz’s case continue, one thing is clear: justice will be served. The people of Corpus Christi can rest easy knowing that those who break the law will be held accountable.
