New Albany, IN – Juan D. Perez-Gonzalez, a 51-year-old from Florida, has been found guilty by a federal jury in a massive electronics cargo theft scheme that spanned over a year and resulted in millions of dollars in losses.
The jury convicted Perez-Gonzalez on charges of conspiracy, possession of stolen goods from interstate commerce, and the interstate transportation of stolen property. He was accused of orchestrating the theft of high-end electronics and other products worth more than $2 million from shipping facilities and cargo trucks across southern Indiana and other states.
Federal prosecutors revealed that Perez-Gonzalez and his five co-conspirators targeted distribution centers used by major companies like Meta, Microsoft, and L Brands. They followed semi-tractor trailers after they left these facilities, stopping drivers to steal entire loads when they stopped for rest or fuel. The stolen goods were then transported to Miami, Florida, where they were sold at a fraction of their retail value.
Carlos Enrique Freire-Pifferrer, Jose Antonio Gomez-Pifferrer, Dalwy De Armas-Rodriguez, Luis Velazquez, and Richard Alameda have all pleaded guilty for their roles in the conspiracy. They are scheduled to be sentenced over the next few months.
This is Perez-Gonzalez’s third federal conviction for cargo theft. His previous offenses include a 2009 heist of $500,000 worth of liquor from an Indiana distribution facility and another scheme in 2014 while on supervised release, both resulting in prison sentences.
The investigation was conducted by the FBI, Indiana State Police, and Kentucky State Police, with U.S. District Judge Tanya Walton Pratt presiding over the trial. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Matthew Rinka and Matthew Barloh prosecuted the case.
