Juan Reyes-Abarca, Heroin Trafficking, New Mexico 2014

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Grimy Times has learned that Juan Reyes-Abarca, a 31-year-old Mexican national from Tepic, Nayarit, Mexico, was sentenced to 70 months in prison for his role in a heroin trafficking conspiracy in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Reyes-Abarca was arrested on April 3, 2014, on charges of unlawfully reentering the United States after being convicted of an aggravated felony. According to court documents, Reyes-Abarca was driving another person to retrieve heroin in Bernalillo County when he was arrested.

The investigation revealed that Reyes-Abarca was deported in December 2006, after being convicted of state heroin trafficking charges in Bernalillo County. Despite this, Reyes-Abarca returned to the United States and continued his involvement in the heroin trade.

On May 14, 2015, Reyes-Abarca pled guilty to participating in a conspiracy to distribute more than 100 grams of heroin. As part of his plea agreement, Reyes-Abarca admitted to ordering and obtaining heroin from suppliers, as well as diluting and re-packaging the heroin for distribution.

Reyes-Abarca also admitted to delivering and selling heroin himself. The case was investigated by the Albuquerque office of the DEA, with assistance from the Albuquerque Police Department and the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Timothy S. Vasquez as part of the New Mexico Heroin and Opioid Prevention and Education (HOPE) Initiative. The HOPE Initiative is a collaborative effort between the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center to reduce opioid-related deaths in New Mexico.

Reyes-Abarca’s sentence will be followed by deportation. Grimy Times will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as more information becomes available.
