Judith Wright, Embezzlement, Washington 2024

A 75-year-old woman from Lynnwood, Washington, who worked as a contract accountant, has been sentenced to prison for stealing nearly $300,000 from her employer.

Judith Wright, who worked for Transportation Demand Management LLC, a Washington State passenger transportation company, was sentenced to 6 months in prison and one year of home detention, announced U.S. Attorney Nick Brown.

Over seven years, Wright stole nearly $300,000 from her employer by writing fraudulent checks to herself and disguising the payments in company books as legitimate vendor payments.

The scheme came to light when a new Chief Financial Officer at the company began questioning some of the entries, leading to an FBI analysis of the accounts that revealed the extent of the theft.

The analysis revealed that much of the money was used for non-business expenses, including over $78,000 in payments to Nordstrom, over $17,000 spent with QVC, and over $20,000 spent at Costco.

This is not Wright’s first conviction for embezzlement. In 1994, she was sentenced to a year and a day in prison for embezzling $45,000 from the bank where she worked as Chief Financial Officer.

Under the terms of the plea agreement, Wright will pay $298,737 in restitution to her former employer.

The case was investigated by the FBI and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Justin Arnold.

Wright’s sentencing hearing was held in U.S. District Court in Seattle, where U.S. District Judge Richard A. Jones noted Wright’s prior conviction and said, ‘Even with the passage of time, you have little respect for the law.’
