Julius Robinson Sentenced for Gunfire in Kalamazoo Liquor Store

GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN — Julius Robinson, Jr., a 27-year-old Kalamazoo resident, has been sentenced to 97 months in prison and three years of supervised release for being a felon in possession of a firearm. The sentence was announced by U.S. Attorney Mark Totten.

U.S. District Court Judge Paul L. Maloney emphasized the severity of Robinson’s actions during sentencing: ‘It is a miracle no one was hurt… Mr. Robinson represents a significant risk to the public and the community needs protection for a long time.’

Mark Totten declared, ‘Julius Robinson is a menace to his community, and Kalamazoo is safer because of today’s sentence.’ He continued, praising local law enforcement for their efforts in apprehending Robinson.

The incident began when Robinson, while purchasing drinks at the Bronco Liquor Mart, threatened another customer with violence. Armed with a .40 caliber Glock pistol and an extended magazine, Robinson followed the man into the parking lot and fired four shots, missing his target.

Forensic analysis and security footage led to Robinson’s identification by the FBI Western Michigan Violent Crime Task Force, who subsequently recovered the gun from his home. Robinson attempted to obstruct justice by instructing his girlfriend, who was present during the crime, to lie on his behalf.

This conviction marks Robinson’s fourth firearm-related offense. His sentence was increased due to his assault with intent to commit murder and obstruction of justice charges. FBI Special Agent in Charge Cheyvoryea Gibson highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts between law enforcement agencies to safeguard communities from violent offenders.
