A Lawrence man is behind bars after a lengthy investigation by the DEA’s Cross Border Initiative. Junior Turbis, 22, was handed a 42-month prison sentence by U.S. District Court Judge Richard G. Stearns for his role in a fentanyl trafficking ring.
Turbis pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute and to possess with intent to distribute 40 grams or more of fentanyl and two counts of distribution of 40 grams or more of fentanyl. He was indicted in December 2020.
According to court documents, Turbis engaged in a drug conspiracy to sell fentanyl and fentanyl analogue to a cooperating witness and to an undercover law enforcement agent in Lawrence from 2019 through 2020. As part of the conspiracy, Turbis delivered and collected payments for the drugs.
A search of Turbis’ residence resulted in the seizure of 93 grams of fentanyl and 151 grams of fentanyl analogue. In total, Turbis distributed or conspired to distribute 292 grams of fentanyl and 151 grams of fentanyl analogue.
U.S. Attorney Rachael S. Rollins and Brian D. Boyle, Special Agent in Charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration, Boston Field Division, made the announcement today. The DEA Cross Border Initiative led the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Timothy Kistner and Jared Dolan of Rollins’ Criminal Division prosecuted the case.
Turbis’ sentence includes two years of supervised release following his prison term. This case is a reminder of the ongoing struggle against the opioid epidemic and the importance of law enforcement’s efforts to disrupt fentanyl trafficking networks.
The case is a result of a collaborative effort by federal, state, and local agencies to combat the opioid crisis. The DEA’s Cross Border Initiative is a key component of this effort, and its work will continue to be crucial in keeping our communities safe.
