June 20, 1913, was a day of reckoning for 20-year-old Daniel A. Dugan Jr., the son of a prominent New Jersey judge. Dugan’s life took a drastic turn when he was convicted of manslaughter after running over and killing seven-year-old Louis Franela McDerMatt on an Orange street. The incident occurred on a fateful Saturday afternoon, and the young victim’s life was tragically cut short.
