On January 23, 2020, the U.S. Department of Justice announced the indictment of Justin Bunkley for his alleged involvement in a violent federal crime in the state of Vermont.
Bunkley was charged with one count of first-degree murder, in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 1111, and one count of using a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence, in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 924(c)(1)(A)(i).
The indictment alleged that Bunkley committed the murder on or about October 30, 2019, within the jurisdiction of the U.S. District Court for the District of Vermont.
The case was filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Vermont, specifically in the Vermont District Court, in Burlington.
Following the indictment, Bunkley was scheduled to appear before U.S. District Judge Geoffrey W. Crawford for a preliminary hearing on February 6, 2020.
However, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the court proceedings were delayed, and the case was eventually resolved through a plea agreement on November 17, 2020. Bunkley pleaded guilty to the charges of first-degree murder and using a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence.
As part of the plea agreement, Bunkley was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder charge and 10 years to run consecutively for the firearm charge.
