A brazen bank robbery in Delaware has ended with a guilty verdict for the defendant, Justin Cabot, 52, of Newark.
According to evidence presented in federal court, on June 24, 2022, Cabot entered the Bank of Delmarva in Laurel, Delaware, wearing a bright yellow shirt. He handed a demand note to the bank teller, who was working her first day at the branch.
The teller, complying with Cabot’s demands, filled a bag with money and a GPS tracking device. Cabot was observed leaving the area on surveillance footage from nearby businesses, removing the distinctive yellow shirt. Five days later, on June 29, 2022, Cabot was arrested in Salisbury, Maryland.
“Cabot’s actions demonstrated his disregard for the rule of law,” said Shannon T. Hanson, Acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Delaware. “While no one was injured, bank robbery is inherently dangerous to innocent bystanders and bank staff.”
Cabot’s conviction comes after a two-day trial in federal court, presided over by the Honorable Colm F. Connolly, Chief United States District Judge.
The defendant is facing a maximum of 20 years imprisonment for the bank robbery. A sentencing date has not been set.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Eli H. Klein and Edmond Falgowski prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the Laurel Police Department and the FBI’s Delaware Violent Crime and Safe Streets Task Force, with assistance from the Wicomico County, Maryland Sheriff’s Department.
