Justine V. Peters, 34, was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon in a shocking turn of events on the Menominee Indian Reservation in Wisconsin. According to court documents, Peters attacked a man with a knife at a residence, leaving him with lacerations to the head and neck. The brutal assault occurred on December 20, 2022.
Gregory J. Haanstad, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin, announced the indictment in a statement. The indictment charges Peters with Assault with a Dangerous Weapon in violation of 18 U.S.C. §§ 113(a)(3) and 1153(a). If convicted, Peters faces a maximum of 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. She also faces up to 3 years of supervised release and payment of a special assessment.
The Menominee Tribal Police Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation investigated the case, with Assistant United States Attorney Andrew J. Maier set to prosecute. Peters, who most recently lived in Neopit, a community on the Menominee Indian Reservation, is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
An indictment is only a charge and not evidence of guilt. Peters is entitled to a fair trial at which the government must prove her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
This case is a disturbing reminder of the violence that can occur in our communities. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and provide updates as more information becomes available.
