Kalamazoo Gunman Gets 7 Years: Linked to Summer Violence

GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN – Bilal Rashaad McDaniel, 30, of Kalamazoo, is headed to federal prison for 84 months after being sentenced today for being a convicted felon illegally possessing firearms. The case, prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Michigan, reveals a dangerous individual connected to a string of violent incidents plaguing the city.

The bust went down in October 2023 when law enforcement executed a search warrant on McDaniel’s home and vehicle. They didn’t just find a single illegal weapon; they uncovered two handguns, a cache of ammunition, and narcotics. But it was the second handgun that sent a chill down spines – investigators quickly determined it had been used in two separate shootings and a homicide all occurring during the summer of 2023. The homicide remains under active investigation, and authorities aren’t ruling out further charges.

“Gun violence is an epidemic across America and here in Michigan that inflicts immense trauma on our communities,” stated U.S. Attorney Mark Totten. “My office, together with our law enforcement partners, will not relent in our efforts to hold accountable those few individuals who are driving violence in our communities. Every person, regardless of where they live, deserves to live their life, walk their neighborhood, and play in the park free from the fear of gunfire.” This isn’t just about removing a gun from the street; it’s about disrupting the cycle of violence that feeds off these ‘crime guns’ – firearms repeatedly used in offenses and passed between individuals and groups.

One of the seized firearms was particularly concerning, equipped with an extended magazine and traced back to having been transported across state lines. Authorities are actively working to trace the origins of both weapons and identify any additional individuals involved in the prior shootings and homicide. The U.S. Attorney’s Office recently launched a summer initiative specifically targeting firearms offenders and the flow of these dangerous ‘crime guns’.

“Removing violent offenders from our communities is ATF’s highest priority,” declared ATF Special Agent in Charge James Deir. “We are proud of our long-standing partnerships in the law enforcement community expanding efforts to disrupt and dismantle these violent criminals.” The investigation was a collaborative effort between the Kalamazoo Valley Enforcement Team and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, highlighting the importance of interagency cooperation in tackling gun violence.

United States Attorney LaToyia Carpenter led the prosecution, building a solid case that secured the 84-month sentence for McDaniel. While the sentence offers a measure of justice for the victims of the prior violence, it also serves as a stark warning to others involved in the illegal gun trade: the feds are watching, and they’re coming down hard on those who put lives at risk in Kalamazoo and beyond.
