SCRANTON – Karen McGinnis, 46, from Mountain Top, PA, got hit with a 20-month prison term for swiping over $400,000 in property taxes. The 46-year-old was the tax collector for Fairview Township, collecting dough from local residents that went straight into her pocket. From March ’23 to January ’25, McGinnis dipped into public funds, writing herself checks. Both Luzerne County and Crestwood School District lost big time. After getting caught, she paid back some $40,000, but the damage was done. Judge Karoline Mehalchick also ordered her to fork over nearly $367,000 in restitution. IRS-Criminal Investigation did their thing, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Kyle A. Moreno ran the prosecution. # # #
