FORT WAYNE, Indiana – A former Bearcreek Township Trustee has pleaded guilty to federal charges of wire fraud, Grimy Times has learned.
Katina Miller, the former Trustee of the Bearcreek Township Trustee’s Office located in Bryant, Indiana, admitted to devising a scheme to divert money for her benefit. Miller pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud, a charge that carries significant penalties.
According to documents filed in the case, from January 2015 through December 31, 2018, Miller embezzled $86,755.39 by using township bank accounts to pay personal expenses through debit cards, ATM withdrawals or checks made payable to herself.
The scheme was uncovered through an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which discovered Miller’s illicit activities and brought charges against her.
Miller’s guilty plea was accepted by United States District Court Judge Holly A. Brady on February 19, 2021. The sentence for Miller’s crime will be determined by the judge after considering federal statutes and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines.
Assistant United States Attorney Stacey Speith is prosecuting the case.
Miller’s case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of transparency and accountability in government. The public expects its leaders to act with integrity and honesty, and those who fail to meet this expectation will be held accountable.
The investigation and prosecution of public corruption cases like Miller’s are crucial to maintaining trust in government and ensuring that those who abuse their power are brought to justice.
