A Kearney man was sentenced to 22 months in the federal slammer for breaking into a post office in Nebraska.
According to the Department of Justice, Tyrelle Smiley, 26, of Kearney, Nebraska, was sentenced on June 13, 2024, in federal court in Lincoln, Nebraska for burglary of a United States Post Office.
Senior United States District Court Judge John M. Gerrard handed down the sentence. There is no parole in the federal system, so Smiley will have to serve the full 22 months.
After Smiley’s release from prison, he will begin a 3-year term of supervised release. The investigation revealed that Smiley and an accomplice broke into the U.S. Post Office branch in Rockville, Nebraska on November 17, 2019.
The pair made off with several items, including items being mailed, U.S. currency belonging to the Post Office, and coils of postal stamps. The burglary was discovered by U.S. Postal employees when they arrived at work on Monday, November 18.
Smiley eventually admitted to entering the post office during an interview with a Postal Inspector. A search of his apartment, with the consent of a roommate, turned up some of the stolen property, including a coil of stamps with Smiley’s fingerprints on them.
Smiley’s original sentence of 30 months’ imprisonment was handed down on June 28, 2023, but it was later tossed out on appeal due to a mistake in the sentencing guidelines. The Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals remanded the case for resentencing.
The case was investigated by the United States Postal Inspection Service.
