A Mercer County, West Virginia, felon has been sentenced to prison for a federal gun crime. Kelvin Maurice Freeman, 29, was sentenced to 37 months in prison for possessing a firearm while prohibited by federal law.
According to the United States Attorney Mike Stuart, Freeman previously admitted to possessing a firearm on May 31, 2018, while traveling on Interstate 64 in Cabell County, West Virginia. This was despite being prohibited from possessing any firearm under federal law due to a conviction in April 2018 for Child Endangerment in Tazewell County, Virginia.
The investigation was conducted by the West Virginia State Police, and the sentence was imposed by United States District Judge Robert C. Chambers. Assistant United States Attorney Stephanie S. Taylor prosecuted the case.
Freeman’s sentence is a result of the Department of Justice’s violent crime reduction efforts, specifically the Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) program.
