Kendall Gilmer, Jr., a 41-year-old Orleans Parish man, has been charged with methamphetamine trafficking and firearms offenses, according to a federal indictment unsealed yesterday.
Gilmer is accused of possessing with intent to distribute 50 grams or more of a mixture and substance containing a detectable amount of methamphetamine on October 18, 2021.
Additionally, Gilmer is charged with possessing two firearms in furtherance of his drug trafficking crimes: a Rock Island Armory Model M1911 A1, .45 caliber semi-automatic handgun, and a Smith & Wesson Model M&P M2.0, .45 caliber semi-automatic handgun.
If convicted, Gilmer faces a statutory mandatory minimum sentence of five years up to 40 years imprisonment, a fine of up to $5,000,000, and at least four years of supervised release following any term of imprisonment.
For possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking offense, Gilmer faces a statutory minimum sentence of five years of imprisonment, to run consecutive with any other sentence, a fine of up to $250,000, and up to five years of supervised release.
The case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the prosecution is being handled by Assistant United States Attorney Ben Myers.
U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans reiterated that the indictment is merely a charging document and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
Gilmer’s indictment marks another significant blow to the scourge of methamphetamine trafficking in Orleans Parish and highlights the commitment of federal authorities to holding accountable those who engage in such crimes.
