Pueblo, CO – Kenneth Lawrence Baca, 44, is headed to federal prison for over 15 years after pleading guilty to drug trafficking and being a felon in possession of a firearm. The bust, triggered by an anonymous tip, reveals a repeat offender brazenly flouting the law while peddling poison in the community.
The investigation began October 12, 2021, when Pueblo police detectives received information about Baca’s narcotics operation. Undercover detectives initiated contact via Facebook Messenger, posing as potential buyers. Baca quickly agreed to sell both heroin and methamphetamine – a clear indication of his intent to profit from addiction.
The following day, law enforcement surveilled Baca at a local motel. He arrived in a dilapidated truck with expired plates and no front license plate. Knowing Baca had a prior conviction and was already on supervised release, officers conducted a traffic stop. When questioned, Baca readily admitted to carrying a pistol in his pocket, leading to his immediate arrest.
A search of Baca’s vehicle and motel room turned up a sickening haul: methamphetamine, fentanyl, heroin, a digital scale, $2,764 in cash, and what appeared to be drug ledgers documenting his transactions. The evidence painted a clear picture of a full-scale narcotics operation. The feds later took over the case, securing the lengthy sentence.
Baca’s criminal history is extensive. This wasn’t his first rodeo. He was already on supervised release for a previous conviction for being a felon in possession of a firearm. This demonstrated a callous disregard for the law and a pattern of escalating criminal behavior. Federal prosecutors successfully argued for a harsh sentence, citing Baca’s repeated offenses and the danger he posed to the public.
On February 1, 2023, Judge Regina M. Rodriguez handed down the 190-month sentence. The FBI Denver Division, working alongside the Pueblo Police Department, secured the conviction. Special Agent in Charge Mark Michalek praised the collaborative effort, vowing to continue dismantling criminal operations and removing dangerous individuals like Baca from the streets. This case is a stark reminder that dealing drugs and illegally carrying firearms comes with serious consequences – consequences that will keep Baca locked up for over a decade and a half.
