A brutal double fatal shooting during a drug robbery has landed 22-year-old Antaveon Bernard Le’Vell Kent behind bars for 26 years. U.S. District Judge Sarah E. Pitlyk handed down the sentence on Friday.
The crime occurred on March 16, 2021, when Kent and his co-defendant opened fire on three victims who had arrived at a meeting spot in the 1100 block of Montgomery Street in St. Louis. The victims, Kortlin Williams and Johnnie Jones, who were best friends, died as a result of the shooting. A third victim was shot but survived.
According to Kent’s plea agreement, he used Facebook to communicate with his co-defendant and plan the robbery. The plan was to steal and sell the victims’ marijuana. When the victims arrived at the meeting spot, Kent and his co-defendant opened fire, shooting all three victims.
Police found 621 grams of marijuana in the victims’ vehicle. Kent pleaded guilty in July to conspiracy to distribute marijuana, attempting to possess with the intent to distribute marijuana and two charges of possession and discharge of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime that resulted in the fatal shootings of Williams and Jones.
Demorion Little, Kent’s co-defendant, has pleaded not guilty to drug and gun charges, including a gun charge that accuses him of the fatal shooting of Rocoby Rodgers on Feb. 25, 2021. The case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the St. Louis Metropolitan Police.
The sentence handed down to Kent is a significant one, and it reflects the severity of the crime he committed. The use of social media to plan and execute the robbery is a disturbing trend that law enforcement is seeing more and more often. As the investigation into Little’s alleged crimes continues, it remains to be seen what sentence he will face if convicted.
