Keshena Man Charged with Attempted Murder, Kidnapping on Menominee Indian Reservation

A federal indictment has been handed down against 42-year-old John V. Miller Jr. of Keshena, Wisconsin, for a heinous crime that shook the Menominee Indian Reservation. Miller is accused of kidnapping, assault with intent to murder, and strangulation.

The indictment, returned by a federal grand jury on April 23, 2024, details the horrific events of March 29, 2024. According to the charges, Miller allegedly strangled a woman with whom he had a prior intimate relationship, attempted to strangle her to the point of unconsciousness, and assaulted her in an attempt to kill her.

The crime unfolded at a location on the Menominee Indian Reservation. Miller then allegedly seized and confined her inside the trunk of a vehicle to conceal his actions. The Menominee Tribal Police Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation investigated the case.

Assistant United States Attorney Andrew J. Maier will prosecute the case in U.S. District Court in Green Bay. The indictment is only a charge and not evidence of guilt. Miller is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial at which the government must prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

The charges against Miller carry severe penalties. He faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 for the kidnapping and assault with intent to murder charges. The domestic assault by strangulation charge carries a maximum penalty of up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
