Keshena Man Charged with Kidnapping, Assault on Menominee Reservation

A federal indictment has charged John V. Miller, Jr., 42, of Keshena, Wisconsin, with kidnapping, assault with intent to murder, and strangulation on the Menominee Indian Reservation. The indictment, returned by a federal grand jury on April 23, 2024, alleges that Miller committed the crimes on March 29, 2024.

According to the indictment, Miller allegedly strangled a woman with whom he had a prior intimate relationship, attempted to strangle her to the point of unconsciousness, and assaulted her in an attempt to kill her. Miller then allegedly seized and confined her inside the trunk of a vehicle to conceal his actions.

The Menominee Tribal Police Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation investigated the case, which was brought to the attention of the community through the efforts of local law enforcement.

The indictment charges Miller with three counts: Kidnapping in Indian Country, Assault with Intent to Murder, and Domestic Assault by Strangulation. If convicted, Miller faces up to 20 years in prison for the first two counts and up to 10 years in prison for the third count, along with fines of up to $250,000.

Assistant United States Attorney Andrew J. Maier will prosecute the case in U.S. District Court in Green Bay. An indictment is only a charge and not evidence of guilt. The defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial at which the government must prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
