Keyawn Lloyd Cook Jr., a 27-year-old Las Vegas resident, has been sentenced to prison for his role in attempting to rob an armored car employee in July 2019. The attempted robbery occurred when Cook allegedly pointed a loaded 9mm handgun at the employee and demanded that they ‘don’t move.’
According to court documents, the incident took place on July 16, 2019, when Cook waited alongside a bank for the armored car to arrive. As the armored car employee entered the bank, Cook ran towards them, displayed the handgun, and made the threatening demand. However, the employee pressed an audible alarm, prompting Cook to flee the scene without taking any money.
Cook was subsequently charged with one count of attempted interference with commerce by robbery. He pleaded guilty to the charge in May 2021 and was sentenced to five years in prison. In addition to the prison term, U.S. District Judge Gloria M. Navarro also ordered Cook to serve three years of supervised release following his prison sentence.
Separately, Cook pleaded guilty to participating in a scheme to defraud the Small Business Administration and a Paycheck Protection Program lender. He filed fraudulent loan applications seeking over $100,000 in loans guaranteed by the Small Business Administration under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act. Cook is scheduled to be sentenced for this crime on June 8, 2022.
The investigation into Cook’s crimes was led by the FBI, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Jessica Oliva handling the prosecution. The case was announced by Acting U.S. Attorney Christopher Chiou for the District of Nevada and Acting Special Agent in Charge W.M. Herrington for the FBI.
