Kirstin Sue Jackson Sentenced for Straw Purchase of Gun Used in Deadly Shooting

PEORIA, Ill. – Kirstin Sue Jackson, 40, of Washington, Illinois, was sentenced to 44 months in federal prison for her role in a deadly straw purchase of a firearm that later ended up in the hands of her son, Eric Jackson.

In May 2021, Jackson admitted to purchasing a Glock Model 19x pistol from Pekin Gun and Sporting Goods on behalf of her underage son. The false statement was made when she claimed to be the actual buyer, when in fact, the gun was for Eric, who could not legally own or possess it.

The consequences were tragic: the gun was used in a July 2021 shooting that left three individuals injured and one man dead, Michael Johnson, 21. Jackson’s son faced arrest and police uncovered a cache of weapons and drugs during searches of his residence.

Jackson acknowledged she knew her son was involved in drug trafficking and had paid for the gun, which she bought for him to protect against ‘risky situations.’ During sentencing, Judge James E. Shadid emphasized the chain of events Jackson’s actions set into motion, resulting in a death and injuries.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Ronald L. Hanna highlighted the serious nature of straw purchasing: “This case should send a message to those thinking about straw purchasing firearms – you have no control over how that gun is used once it leaves your hands – and you will be subject to federal prosecution if you lie when you buy.”

Investigation was led by ATF agents and the Peoria Police Department, with Hanna representing the government. Jackson entered a guilty plea in September 2022 and served on bond until her sentencing.
