A tense standoff unfolded in the streets of Steubenville, Ohio, as Sheriff Edward Lucas thwarted a potential riot by turning back a group of armed Klansmen. The would-be rioters, who had arrived in five automobiles, were met with a firm hand by the sheriff, who refused to let them join the fray. Guns at the ready, the Kluxer band had mistaken Lucas for a threat, ordering him to surrender. But upon realizing their mistake, they laid down their arms, surrendering six of their number as suspicious characters. The others were told to leave the city to prevent further trouble.
