Kloud Logan Jones, 27, of Mt. Sterling, Ky., was convicted of distributing fentanyl that led to a fatal overdose in Kentucky. Jones pleaded guilty on October 19, 2018, to distributing a lethal dose of fentanyl to an individual identified as R.A.S. while both were inmates at the Montgomery County Regional Jail on November 23, 2017.
Video surveillance from the jail captured the incident, which led to a federal investigation by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). Jones is facing a mandatory minimum sentence of 20 years and a maximum sentence of life imprisonment for his role in the distribution of the deadly drug.
This conviction is part of a larger crackdown on fentanyl distribution in the Eastern District of Kentucky. The U.S. Attorney’s Office, led by Robert M. Duncan, Jr., has made it a priority to prosecute individuals who distribute fentanyl and other dangerous drugs that result in overdoses and deaths.
In a separate case, Garry Sean Ramone Drake, Jr, 26, of Lexington, pleaded guilty on November 26, 2018, to distribution of fentanyl resulting in the death of an individual identified as M.R. on November 30, 2017. Drake is the second individual convicted of distribution resulting in M.R.’s death, with Phillip Clayton Jennings, 23, also of Lexington, previously entering a guilty plea to the same charge.
The Lexington Police Department and the DEA jointly investigated the death, which led to federal charges against Drake. He too is facing a mandatory minimum sentence of 20 years and a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.
Assistant United States Attorney Todd Bradbury prosecuted the cases on behalf of the United States. The convictions were jointly announced by United States Attorney Duncan, Darrell Christopher Evans, Special Agent in Charge, DEA Louisville, Fred Shortridge, Montgomery County Sheriff, and Lawrence Weathers, Chief of Police, Lexington-Fayette County Division of Police.
The distribution of fentanyl and other dangerous drugs is devastating communities across the country with addiction and death. These convictions demonstrate law enforcement’s commitment to thoroughly investigating and prosecuting drug distribution that results in an overdose.
