Knightly Admits Supplying Gun in Deadly Maine Shootout

PORTLAND, ME – Stephanie Knightly, 50, of South Paris, Maine, has admitted to playing a key role in arming a dangerous felon who would later die in a violent confrontation with law enforcement. Knightly pleaded guilty today in U.S. District Court to one count of transferring a firearm to a person prohibited from possessing one – a charge that carries serious consequences.

According to federal prosecutors, the chain of events began on August 16, 2014, when Knightly purchased a pistol in Scarborough, Maine. But this wasn’t a legitimate transaction. The purchase was orchestrated by Steven Piirainen, a convicted felon known to Knightly. Piirainen, desperate to avoid returning to prison, allegedly provided Knightly with the cash to buy the weapon.

Court records detail a chilling pre-crime conversation. Prior to the illegal firearm transfer, Piirainen reportedly confided in Knightly that he anticipated imminent arrest by his probation officer and declared his intention to avoid re-incarceration at all costs – a stark foreshadowing of the violence to come. Knightly, despite knowing Piirainen’s status as a felon and his intent, proceeded with the purchase.

The following day, after stealing a truck, Piirainen used the illegally obtained firearm in a shootout with the Maine State Police in South Paris. He was struck by gunfire and died at the scene. The incident brought a wave of scrutiny to the source of Piirainen’s weapon, ultimately leading to Knightly’s indictment and now, her guilty plea.

Assistant United States Attorney Darcie N. McElwee, who is prosecuting the case, confirmed that Knightly now faces a maximum sentence of up to 10 years imprisonment and a hefty $250,000 fine. Sentencing will be scheduled following the completion of a pre-sentence investigation report prepared by the U.S. Probation Office, giving the court a comprehensive assessment of Knightly’s background and culpability.

The investigation, a collaborative effort between the Maine State Police, the Lewiston Police Department, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), highlights the dangers of illegal firearm trafficking and the devastating consequences when weapons fall into the hands of those prohibited from owning them. This case serves as a grim reminder of how seemingly small actions can fuel larger tragedies.
