A 23-year-old Pitcairn woman pointed what appeared to be a knife at a postal clerk and demanded money during a botched robbery attempt at her hometown post office, federal prosecutors confirm. Kristen Risko walked into the Pitcairn United States Post Office on July 21, 2016, hood up, face hidden behind dark sunglasses, and hand clenched around a metallic object she claimed was a space heater remote.
Witnesses say Risko advanced on the clerk, raised her right hand, and demanded cash—telling him to hand over everything. The sleeve of her gray hooded sweatshirt concealed her grip on the object, leading the clerk to believe he was staring down a blade. With no clear way to defend himself, the employee stalled—telling Risko police had just passed and were circling back. He ducked behind a doorframe. She bolted.
Surveillance footage captured every step: her entrance, the standoff, the retreat. Law enforcement traced her path as she discarded the sweatshirt and sunglasses in a residential yard—items later recovered by investigators. The next day, Postal Inspectors arrived at her home. Risko admitted to tossing the remote into a nearby creek and throwing the clothing into a neighbor’s yard while fleeing.
She pleaded guilty to one count of attempted post office robbery in federal court before U.S. District Judge David S. Cercone. Assistant United States Attorney Shanicka L. Kennedy is handling the prosecution. No plea deal details have been released, but the charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
Judge Cercone has scheduled sentencing for July 25, 2018. Under federal guidelines, the final sentence will weigh the offense’s severity and Risko’s criminal history. For now, she remains in custody, ordered detained pending sentencing.
The investigation was a joint effort between the United States Postal Inspection Service and the Pitcairn Borough Police Department—proving even small-town crimes can trigger full federal firepower. The Pitcairn Post Office remains open, its staff back behind the counter, watching the door a little closer now.
