ORLANDO, FL – Kristian Ramos, 43, of Kissimmee, is looking at a potential decade and a half in federal prison after pleading guilty today to possessing a firearm despite a rap sheet stretching back years. Ramos admitted to having a Beretta Nano 9mm handgun on May 23, 2023, a clear violation of federal law given his extensive criminal history.
This isn’t Ramos’ first dance with the justice system. Court records reveal a pattern of violent offenses. He’s a four-time convicted felon, previously busted for robbery with a deadly weapon, possession of a controlled substance, and *another* robbery charge. Federal law explicitly bars anyone with such convictions from owning a firearm or ammunition.
The bust was a joint operation between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. While details of the initial investigation haven’t been released, the agencies clearly moved swiftly to bring charges against Ramos. Assistant U.S. Attorney Noah P. Dorman is prosecuting the case, and is expected to push for the maximum sentence.
Federal officials are framing the case as part of “Project Safe Neighborhoods” (PSN), a broad initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence. The program, according to the Department of Justice, focuses on building trust with communities, supporting local anti-violence organizations, and strategically targeting enforcement efforts.
Ramos’ plea comes at a time of heightened scrutiny on illegal gun possession and repeat offenders. While the Justice Department touts PSN as a success story, critics argue that the program often fails to address the root causes of crime. Regardless, Ramos now faces a serious reckoning for his actions. A sentencing date has not yet been set, but with a maximum penalty of 15 years on the table, his future looks bleak.
The Tampa Field Division of the ATF spearheaded the investigation. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the sentencing when a date is announced. For now, Ramos remains in custody, a stark reminder that illegally possessing a firearm comes with severe consequences, especially for those with a history of violent crime.
