In a shocking case of corruption, Krystle Burrell, a correction officer at Rikers Island, pleaded guilty to bribery in federal court in Brooklyn, New York.

Burrell admitted to accepting nearly $10,000 in bribe payments in exchange for smuggling contraband into Rikers Island, a notorious jail facility in New York City.
This is not the first case of corruption at Rikers Island, as another correction officer, Katrina Patterson, pleaded guilty to bribery on August 16, 2022 for accepting over $34,000 in bribe payments in exchange for smuggling contraband into the jail.
The defendants, Burrell and Patterson, were employed by the New York City Department of Corrections (DOC) and betrayed their sworn duty to maintain the safety of incarcerated individuals and other correction officers at Rikers Island.
According to court documents, Patterson accepted at least $34,090 in bribes from co-conspirators on behalf of co-defendant Michael Ross in exchange for smuggling contraband into the Robert N. Davoren Center on Rikers Island for Ross.
The investigation was led by the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, Breon Peace, in collaboration with the New York City Department of Investigation (DOI), the New York City Police Department (NYPD), and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).
The guilty pleas serve as a warning to correction officers and others who engage in corrupt activities, as the consequences are severe and can include termination from their City employment.
