Kurup Seuell, Illegal Firearm, Independence MO, 2023

KANSAS CITY, MO – Kurup C. Seuell, 21, of Independence, Missouri, is facing up to a decade in federal prison after pleading guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm. The bust comes less than a month after Seuell was released on parole following a 2018 conviction for stealing, proving a revolving door for criminals and a slap in the face to law-abiding citizens.

According to court documents, Seuell and an accomplice secured a Glock 9mm handgun on January 30, 2021, through a classic straw purchase scheme at Frontier Justice in Lee’s Summit, Missouri. The deal went down just 28 days after Seuell walked out of a Missouri Department of Corrections facility. Federal law is clear: a convicted felon isn’t allowed to possess a firearm or ammunition, period. Seuell immediately flaunted the weapon in a Facebook video, kicking off a digital trail of brazen disregard for the law.

But the Glock was just the tip of the iceberg. A deep dive into Seuell’s social media revealed a disturbing collection of weaponry. Investigators documented at least eight, but potentially up to 99, firearms in his posts – including assault-style rifles and Glock handguns illegally modified with “switches” to function as fully automatic weapons. The posts also showed Seuell hawking guns for sale and documenting himself firing weapons at shooting ranges. One video even captured him blasting away with a fully automatic handgun.

The investigation reached a critical point on March 29, 2023, as authorities attempted to locate Seuell for arrest. He responded by posting *another* video, this time firing an AR-type pistol equipped with a drum magazine at Crossfire Recreation Center in Independence. Investigators secured signed copies of the range’s safety rules and waiver, along with surveillance footage of Seuell not only firing multiple weapons but also purchasing 50 rounds of ammunition from the on-site gun store. The same day, more photos surfaced of Seuell posing with his arsenal in a bedroom.

When officers moved in on March 30, 2023, Seuell attempted a desperate escape, leading police on a high-speed chase. He was apprehended at a gas station after ditching his vehicle. A search of his residence turned up the firearms showcased in his social media posts and the surveillance footage, along with the ammunition recently purchased. The evidence painted a clear picture: Seuell wasn’t just possessing illegal weapons, he was actively building a dangerous stockpile.

Seuell now faces up to 10 years in federal prison without parole. While the sentencing is ultimately up to U.S. District Judge Roseann Ketchmark, considering advisory guidelines and statutory factors, this case serves as a stark reminder of the ease with which convicted felons can obtain firearms and the importance of cracking down on straw purchasers. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Missouri, led by Teresa A. Moore, is prosecuting the case. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case as it moves towards sentencing.
