RAPID CITY – In a recent move to combat violent crime and gun violence, U.S. District Court Chief Judge Roberto Lange sentenced 33-year-old Kyle Puckett to three years and five months in federal prison for possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.
Puckett, a Black Hawk, South Dakota, resident, was convicted of the crime after being arrested in Rapid City with a loaded pistol, over a thousand dollars in cash, numerous loaded magazines, a distributable amount of methamphetamine, and drug distribution paraphernalia.
Puckett, who is a convicted felon, pleaded guilty on April 5, 2024, to the charge of Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person. He was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
The charges against Puckett were filed after his arrest, which was a result of a joint investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and the Rapid City Police Department.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Anna Lindrooth prosecuted the case as part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) program, which aims to reduce violent crime and gun violence in communities across the United States.
The PSN program, launched in May 2021, focuses on fostering trust and legitimacy in communities, supporting community-based organizations that help prevent violence, setting focused and strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring results.
Puckett’s sentence includes three years of supervised release following his prison term and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
