Lakewood Tax Pro Accused of $158K Fraud
LAKEWOOD, OH – Godrich Machuta, 34, of Lakewood, is facing serious federal charges after being indicted on 39 counts related to a large-scale tax fraud scheme. The indictment, unsealed today, alleges Machuta conspired to file false income tax returns, illegally padding refunds and stealing from the US Treasury.
According to the indictment, Machuta worked at Cleveland-based Paglory Tax Services in 2010 and 2011. During his time there, he allegedly teamed up with Mwale Kakusa to fraudulently obtain funds by filing returns riddled with false, fictitious, and outright fabricated claims. The total amount of these false claims exceeds $158,000, according to federal prosecutors.
“This wasn’t a mistake; it was a calculated effort to steal from American taxpayers,” stated Steven M. Dettelbach, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio, in a press release. Kathy Enstrom, Special Agent in Charge of the Cincinnati Field Office of Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigations, added that the IRS is committed to pursuing those who exploit the tax system for personal gain.
Kakusa has already admitted guilt, pleading to preparing over a dozen fraudulent tax returns with false refund claims totaling approximately $52,468. He is currently awaiting sentencing, and his cooperation may be a factor in the case against Machuta. The pair allegedly worked together to systematically exploit loopholes and submit bogus returns, lining their pockets at the expense of honest taxpayers.
Machuta is charged with conspiracy to defraud the United States, making false claims, wire fraud, and other related offenses. Assistant United States Attorney Justin J. Roberts is prosecuting the case following an investigation conducted by IRS-CI. If convicted on all counts, Machuta faces a potentially lengthy prison sentence and significant financial penalties.
It’s crucial to remember that an indictment is not proof of guilt. Machuta is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. He is entitled to a vigorous defense and a fair trial, where the government must present compelling evidence to secure a conviction. Grimy Times will continue to follow this case as it unfolds.
